Our mission is to push the boundaries of fundamental science, translating it into equitable transformative therapies, and investing in the education and mentorship of the upcoming generation of biotechnology visionaries. Our vision is to understand and manipulate fundamental mechanisms driving stem cell development while effectively applying novel technological solutions to accomplish this goal. Core values: Collaborative, impactful, creative, respectful and inclusive.

Research in the Zandstra Laboratory is focused on the generation of functional tissue from somatic and pluripotent stem cells. Our quantitative, technology-driven approach strives to gain new insights into fundamental mechanisms that control stem cell fate and to develop robust technologies for the propagation of stem cells and their derivatives. Our primary focus is on applying these concepts to the hematopoietic system and differentiation of blood cell lineages.

Our work is accomplished through 4 integrated research pillars:

01

Multi-scale simulation of human tissue- and organo-genesis

02

Synthetic control of cell fate and function

03

Cell niche engineering

04

Cellular therapeutics
